LIVERPOOLWORLD WAR IISTATUESCULPTURE

Off to Liverpool today to visit the Western Approaches Museum, which was far less interesting than it sounded, since it was where the Western Approaches were monitored, the Western Approaches being an area of the Atlantic directly west of the United Kingdom, which was important in the Second World War due the fact that it was a vital shipping route for the allies.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad museum, it’s just a bit uninteresting, almost like a museum of about 10-20 years ago maybe. Still, the room where the RAF organised their defenses was quite impressive. What I didn’t know was how much the Soviet Union depended on supply convoys in the Arctic from the UK, Iceland and North America. It was hazardous for more than one reason. Of course there was the risk of U-Boats, but conditions were equally deadly.

After that we walked around Liverpool until I spied this sculpture which was in memory of the Blitz of 1940-42. It was unveiled by the Duke of Edinburgh in 2020.
