When we were in Padova, we saw this installation which was gifted to the region of Venice which includes a beam from the World Trade Centre. Named “Memoria e Luce” or Memory and Light, it is a memorial to the terrorist attacks on September the 11th 2001. Why Padova was gifted this beam, I have no idea, but it’s striking and is very memorable.

Apparently the open booklike monument signifies peace. It turns out that after reading a bit more, it appears that the US have military facilities around the Veneto region, though I suspect there are many places in the world with US military bases and probably very few of them have a piece of the World Trade Centre.

Interestingly, from the centre of the book there is a line that projects outward and apparently towards New York, which I’m inclined to believe is more or less correct. Though my scrabblings on Google Maps are barely accurate, it does appear to be at least in the right direction.
