Solomon's Un-Temple

I’ve been meaning to visit Solomon’s Temple for a while now. On a hill overlooking Buxton, I knew nothing about it other than it looks like a nice tower to visit, and perhaps the visit would include a nice walk up as well. Mind you I think my mistake was parking so close. Google says a 20 minute walk… I doubt it, though walking from Buxton might be a walk too far, however Google also says that’s just 35 minutes. Looking from the top of the temple, 35 minutes, seems just as unlikely, just the other way. Perhaps it’s a walk to have a go at when I have plenty of time. Mind you, there is a bit of a climb as well, though I suspect it’s gentle all the way.

Not a Temple at all, in fact I have no idea why it’s call that, it’s a Victorian folly built to replace a previously existing structure that built by Solomon Mycock which was a burial mound prior to both structures.

As usual with the area, the Devonshire’s were involved and put in £25, and the residents of Buxton raising £50, it was started and built in 1896.

You can climb the “Temple” and you get a 306 degree view that includes Buxton, Mam Tor and Kinder Scout. However it does look a little like a smaller Chesterton’s Windmill, it just has less utility being a folly.
