Transport Photography: Planes, Bridges & Moving Machines

Transport encompasses an extraordinary range of human engineering—from the roaring engines of commercial and military aircraft to the quiet mechanical rhythm of heritage railways, canal waterways, and historic bridges.

While my personal passion leans heavily toward aviation—having grown up with a family connection to Hawker Siddeley, British Aerospace (BAe), and Avro at Woodford, and now residing right beside the Avro Heritage Museum—this gallery explores the sheer variety of ways we navigate the world. Interestingly enough, despite a lifelong fascination with aircraft (and even taking a few flying lessons myself!), I’ve never been a huge fan of actual flying.

This collection plays with the definition of transit, featuring everything from traditional vehicles to massive, functional pieces of transport infrastructure:

  • The Rochefort Transporter Bridge (Pont Transbordeur de Rochefort): A rare surviving piece of turn-of-the-century French engineering. Unlike static road bridges, this fully operational aerial ferry physically transports vehicles and pedestrians across the Charente River on a suspended gondola platform.

  • Aviation & Aerodynamics: Capturing the power, form, and mechanical detail of historic aircraft—from scale prototypes to legendary cold-war delta wings.

  • Waterways & Maritime Routes: Exploring working docks, coastal ferries, and quiet canal lock systems that served as the original industrial highways of the UK and Europe.

Photography Notes: Capturing Motion & Metal

  • Freeze Action vs. Motion Blur: When photographing moving transport, decide early whether you want to freeze high-speed movement (using fast shutter speeds like 1000\s - 1/2500s for aircraft in flight) or convey speed using dynamic panning techniques (1/30s - 1/60s) as a vehicle passes by.

  • Highlight Structural Geometry: Large industrial transport infrastructure—like steel cable-stayed bridges or hangar interiors—benefits from strong geometric compositions. Use leading lines, steel rivets, and structural cables to guide the eye toward your main subject.
