Water Photography: Reflection, Motion & Texture

Water is one of the most dynamic elements in landscape and architectural photography. Depending on the environment, light, and shutter speed, it can transform from a razor-sharp mirror into a smooth, silk-like ribbon of motion—or provide the essential framing that holds a grand vista together.

Photography Notes: Mastering Water Landscapes

  • Use a Circular Polarizer (CPL): A polarizing filter is indispensable when shooting around water. Rotating the filter allows you to either cut through surface glare to reveal submerged detail beneath the surface, or enhance reflections by managing how light bounces off the water.

  • ND Filters for Motion Blur: To achieve silky waterfall textures or calm rough waves in daylight, use a 3-stop to 10-stop Neutral Density (ND) filter. This reduces the amount of light entering the lens, allowing for long shutter speeds ($1\text{ s} - 30\text{ s}$) without overexposing the frame.
