Underground Staffordshire: A Day at Apedale Heritage Centre

We visited Apedale Heritage Centre in Newcastle-under-Lyme today, and it turned out to be a wonderful surprise.

Upon arrival, it initially gave the impression that many volunteer-led heritage sites across the UK do—a little bit disorganized around the edges. Don’t get me wrong, that isn't necessarily a bad thing! I remember visiting the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum in Doncaster, which had a similar feel. Half the fun of those places is nosing around independently to see what hidden gems you can discover, The absolute highlight of the trip was taking the guided underground tour into the historic Gresley Colliery drift mine.

The volunteer guides were fantastic—deeply knowledgeable, engaging, and capable of bringing the harsh reality of Victorian and 20th-century coal mining to life. Without the guided tour, the surface museum is fairly small, but going underground makes the entire trip worthwhile.

We took the shorter tour route, as water levels deeper in the mine shafts remain higher outside the peak dry summer months. Even with the truncated route, it was packed with fascinating insights for a non-miner like myself.

The onsite café was completely overrun during our visit, with a 20-to-30-minute wait for food. Because we had a strict time slot booked for our mine tour, we had to skip the café entirely. If you're visiting on a busy weekend, either book your tour with plenty of buffer time or pack a picnic!

Once back above ground in the daylight, we spent time exploring the outdoor display area.

Like the museum interior, the yard is an eclectic, slightly scattered collection of historic industrial equipment, narrow-gauge railway tracks, and mining machinery. The featured photograph for this post shows a piece of vintage haulage gear—if I am not mistaken, it was used to lower miners and coal tubs safely down into the incline shafts.

While it might lack the polished, sterile curation of a massive national museum, Apedale’s authentic, hands-on charm and the sheer passion of its volunteers make it well worth a visit.
